The problems with substance abuse and drug addiction affect not only the patients but also their entourage. Motivating a narcotic user to change his behavior or to seek treatment may be a major challenge for his significant others. These often feel powerless and exhausted in the face of the consumer’s behaviors and the social, economic and subsequent issues they cause.
The CRAFT method (Community Reinforcement and Family Training), developed by Smith and Meyers (2004), is a unilateral family intervention dedicated to the relatives of people suffering from narcotics abuse and who refuse treatment. Based on behavioral principles and building on supportive techniques and communicative training, it encourages the identified patient to engage into treatment, to change his consumption of drugs and to improve the well being of the people around him.
This article summarizes the principles on which the method is based and the components of its interventions. Its clinical use is discussed. A brief overview of the scientific elements is available, and future developments are adressed.
